I never waited so eagerly for a game sequel than I was waiting for a continuation of a famous Panzer General by SSI. When I finally put my hands on that game I was a bit disappointed but after some time I started to like it very much. Panzer2 has evolved quite a lot from its predecessor and new options were added. The first thing you notice when launching the game is new graphics. Photo realistic maps, 3d-like unit icons and changed interface make the game looking completely different. But it is not about graphics but new features that make the game more attractive. You can assign a commander to your veteran unit and that will definitely increase unit’s battle value. With overrun trait present you can see your armoured units thrash retreating enemy, which makes Blitzkrieg even more fascinating. Recon units are far better than in previous editions as they are more flexible, faster and can quickly cover long distances, which won’t make them just ruined slots into your army.
Traditionally a player can choose between playing one of 5 campaigns, ready made scenario or can create his/her own scenario. Campaigns include 2 German campaigns (1938, 1942), American, English and Russian one. It is a great improvement as it combines Panzer and Allied General into one game. As a German general you start your campaign during Spanish Civil War, where you can test your units and tactics. Russian front is still deadly and difficult because of the weather and supply difficulties. Good news for players who were losing planes because of lack of fuel – in Panzer General 2 you don’t have to worry about refuelling your aircraft. Game maps scale is set to in a way that every hex of a map corresponds with 2km in a real world. A multiplayer option is also available which is a great fun.
After many years Panzer General series are still popular and a massive community of Panzer enthusiasts provide new scenarios, equipment and maps for the game. You can change your game completely turning it into completely new time period or war theatre. I rediscovered Panzer General II during boring office hours and fell in love with it again. It is a must play for all Panzer General series lovers. Enjoy!
