MicroLeague Football 2, is hands down, one of the most statistically accurate and intellectually challenging football managers on the market to this day. The only thing keeping it off the modern best sellers list is the fact that it is played with all teams and players from the early nineties football rosters. It is a fully licensed title, and all of the teams and players are included in the National Football League and it features both conferences. The player’s statistics are all accurate through the 1991 season.
MicroLeague Footaball 2 is the second installment in the franchise produced and published by MicroLeague Sports Association. It was released for play early in 1993 and was only available for the personal computer running the MS-DOS operating system. It, as mentioned above, concerns American rules football, as opposed to soccer. It plays entirely from the third person omniscient perspective. It plays very similarly to the first game in the series, but the most obvious change is the inclusion of graphics in what was previously a text-driven game. Some of the other great amenities in this game include a very comprehensive playbook editor, allowing the user to build his own plays from scratch or modify those that are included. The user can also completely customize the leagues and the scheduling to make it how he always dreamed it should be. Another fun alteration is the ability to change the conditions during the game. Weather actually plays a large factor in the play of some of the competitors, so this is actually a bigger, more impacting deal than one would first think.
The fact that the play is based on the abilities of actual players is very fun. The player’s abilities, injuries, and age/fatigue all factor into the play of the game as much as the weather does. It is a very nice touch and prevents players from building some highly experienced and overqualified iron man out of a running back, for example, that was scheduled to have a six year career. You get to utilize all the strengths at every position and on both sides of the ball, from the 49er passing game to the defense of the Iron Curtain. You are also allowed to go back in history to the beginning of statistical records and play with powerhouse teams of old.
Overall, this is a fun and solid game and filled with great statistical accuracies that are the driving force behind the game’s success. It is so focused on the stats’ influence, that it is even possible to turn off the game, get instantaneous computerized results, and move on to planning the tactics and personnel for the next one. It is a good game.
