Game Review

I first played the PC game Diggers about 10 years ago on an ancient PC of mine with my brothers, and I have been addicted ever since.

The game is a basic 2D puzzle game where you control a team of 5 diggers, (with 4 different races to choose from, each varying in speed, strength etc) and you have to beat the opponents' team by either fighting them to the death or collecting more gold from the mine shafts within a certain time limit.

As you tunnel through the labyrinth of the underground, you expose gems and jewels which can be picked up and sold at the market in exchange for better drilling equipment, explosives, lifts, mine trains and even boats for the flooded section. There is no end to the possibilities of what you can do potentially.

I think that this game appeals to me so much because of just that: the ability to explore and do just about anything, whether it be running through caves of ghosts to reach incredibly valuable gems, or blocking off your enemies in tunnels and plotting their deaths.

The controls where pretty 20th century- a small panel was available, and only one character could be controlled at a time with simple commands such as jump, walk in either direction or run, dig in a given direction or teleport back to your home bass (which is safe from enemies). Once you get used to these controls it makes perfect sence though. This game is a strategic game, against the clock, where simple mistakes can cost you badly.

I never actually owned the full game, only a demo that came with a bunch of others, but even that one level on a basic map was so addictive and endearing it still lives on, in 2009. I would recommend it to anyone who remembers basic PC games on the early editions of windows, such as lemmings.

I have not forgotten that one of the races, which we named the ‘hoodies’ would spontaneously stop and go to sleep after digging, even in crucial times such as battles. Watch out for them, it is not unlikely that they would fall asleep at any crucial point when you need them, but it all adds to the entertainment of the game, especially if you are against the Hoodies, as it makes them incredibly easy targets……

This is generally a really cool game and a must play for anyone.
