What an excellent example of a classic educational game. I remember playing this game as a kid on a school computer. It’s an easy, fun and simple way to teach your child to do math. It has several difficulty levels and can teach many different math skills. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, you name it. This is a very versatile teaching tool, as well as fun and challenging for the player. You would never guess that you're learning when you play it, and that’s probably the best way for it to be, seriously.
The graphics are simple, and no better than can be expected from that era. However, there are several entertaining cut scenes and mini-games after completing certain levels. Very fun and imaginative. You take the reigns of the Number Muncher, an 8-bit green 'thing' who eats the correct answer to the question at the top of the screen. You have to watch out for the other Munchers who enter the screen, however, because they could cost you your life. Fill up the bar and you become the Super Muncher and can take out anything in your path. Once all of the correct answers have been eaten you advance to the next level.
The sound effects are simple, yet adequate for such a game. There are plenty of small beeps and munching noises to entertain me. There is a simple menu system and this game has all the elements of an old-school Dos educational game. It stands tall next to Oregon Trail and Math Blaster. It’s one of the greats of the ancient computer games. Anybody who played this game as a kid will enjoy it as an adult for sure.
Number Munchers is a fun learning tool which provides good repetition for any elementary student learning Math. Great for home schooling or any school program also. I hope that other kids can experience the joy I had playing this great game. My favorite part about it is how simple and easy it is, and yet how challenging and, well, slightly thrilling it is to pass all of the levels. To tell the truth, I've never beaten the whole thing. The minigames just keep getting more challenging! But they are always fun and good for a laugh. Please give it a try, I'm sure that you and anyone whom you show it to will be delighted to see it!
