The game was created in the early nineties by Sierra, who had been working on it for a number of years. Their goal was to create a game that mirrored the old version but with better graphics, more creative levels, and better opponents. I daresay they succeeded.
When I first played this game I was very young, in perhaps fourth or fifth grade. There was an old computer in our classroom and we were transfixed by what was known then only as “Lode Runner.” We were amazed by the simple game-play, the fast-paced action, and the overall fun of such a seemingly straightforward game. It had decent graphics for something so old, and I was surprised even then at how addicting it was.
Years later, I remembered the game and I tried valiantly to find it. I was eventually successful, though it took over an hour (because I didn’t know the actual name of the game). The game was a sequel to an original made in the eighties, but the game was too simple, easy, and the later levels were merely copies of earlier ones with a few new twists.
Now, the game has been remastered, with better graphics and sound, a great soundtrack, and smarter A.I. (to an extent). The levels are more fun, there are more tools to use against your enemies, and better tactics can be employed because the game has a better feel.
The game has two modes: single player and two-player. The levels differ depending on which mode you choose. In the single player game, there are over 100 levels to play and beat, and in the two player version (which is played on one keyboard) the levels become more symmetrical and teamwork-based.
There is also a slightly primitive scenario editor, where it is possible to make levels using the same tools as the creators. There are all the same tiles, and it is possible to recreate levels to the best of your ability. It can lead to fun (if sometimes impossible) levels.
You play as a little guy who is constantly chased by bad-tempered monks who are trying to eat him. He can dig holes, throw bombs, set traps, climb ladders, move across ropes, and freefall to try to avoid them. He is constantly searching for gold, and when he gets it all, a portal opens up and he can move to the next level.
Although the A.I. is not particularly amazing, it is a step up from the old game. It has great game-play and feel, and the speed can be adjusted. It is a fresh mix of strategy and action, and even today it is known as a great, fun, adventure game that can kill time or melt your brain.
