Welltris is one of the many Tetris knockoffs that became popular after the advent of the arcade classic. It is a mixture of Tetris and Blockout and was actually designed by Alexey Pajitnov, the programmer of the original Tetris, with the help of Andrei Sgenov. It is primarily a game of Tetris in three dimensions.
With Tetris, the user looked onto the playing field from a third person perspective and watched colored blocks, each four pieces in size, fall onto the field. The player was charged with rotating these colored blocks to make solid horizontal lines across the bottom of the playing field.
Hence the title, Welltris is more like Tetris in a well. The user has a top down perspective and watches the colored blocks fall into a four-sided well, instead of a two-dimensional playing board. The blocks fall from all sides of the well, and—like the original—continue their fall until they strike something…either another block or the side of the well. The user can manipulate the bricks by rotating them and moving them around the well before they touch. To do this, the gamer uses the numeric keypad. The goal is the same as the original—to make a solid base at the bottom of the well, which will then be removed from the playing field.
The user has a choice of building solid rows, either horizontally or vertically. If a falling block is incapable of touching the well’s bottom, a wall will flash red for a short time. It will eventually quit and return to its normal color. However, if the user is having a bad moment, and all four walls end up flashing red at the same time due to a succession of poorly placed blocks, the game will be over. The game switches to a cut scene of a cartoonish Russian family celebrating. Welltris features three levels of difficulty and five different speeds on each level. The graphics are certainly not stellar, partially due to the time period of its release and partially due to the fact that there is not much a designer can really do with a brick. The game play, however, is good and that is the reason people tend to play puzzle games in the first place.
Welltris is an amusing puzzle game with features of two other popular games. It is a difficult game to master and will require practice, practice and more practice. It features simple graphic displays and an easy user interface. It is recommended for download. Fans of Tetris, Pentix, Blockout and other puzzle games will enjoy it immensely.
