KKnD Xtreme is a 25th Century real time strategy game that was released in the late nineties by Melbourne House. It is an improved version of KKnD (Krush, Kill ‘n’ Destroy).
A nuclear war has ravaged the face of planet Earth. In an effort to avoid the effects of the fall out, many citizens have fled to the underground, building a vast and flourishing civilization. Unfortunately, not all of Earth’s citizens made it to the safety of the underground. The result was devastating. Those who were not killed by the nuclear blast became horrific mutants, still with the ability to create their own technology, weapons, and counter civilization. Each civilization features units and buildings that reflect their nature. The surface dwellers ride mutated creatures and use primitive, but effective weaponry, such as blade throwers and sawed off shotguns. The undergrounders feature futuristic tanks and other mechanical military.
In KKnD Xtreme, the user chooses to control one of these opposing factions. There are numerous unique and futuristic mechanical units as well as mutated humanesque soldiers. KKnD Xtreme features all of the units and constructible buildings as the original, for a total of over fifty different units and buildings. All the units are unique onto themselves, not recoloured copies of an opposing unit. Xtreme also offers all thirty original missions and ten multiplayer missions. As one example of its expansion and improvement, however, KKnD Xtreme features twenty all new missions and a skirmish mode. The multiplayer action has been increased and the game can handle up to six players through a network connection. Battle objectives are clearly stated in new mission briefings before the battle begins to improve strategies. Xtreme features SVGA graphics and provides more chaos and carnage during the fights than its predecessor. The AI is much more competent.
KKnD Xtreme features fast and challenging real time strategy, made more complex in multiplayer mode. There are some nearly humorous cut scenes and animations for many of the actions the user will perform. It also has a reasonably easy to manage user interface, which is helpful in detail oriented games such as this. It would make an excellent download for sci-fi lovers, fans of the original, or people who enjoy war strategies…with a twist.
