Game Review

Developed, naturally, by Horrorsoft, Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus is one of several video games starring Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. It was published by Accolade Incorporated in the very early nineties, and is an adventure and role playing hybrid. It plays out from the first person’s perspective, and obviously features horror or macabre themes. It has been described by adult gamers as truly creepy, and not a game to play alone or in the dark.
In this video game, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark has actually been kidnapped by a more evil and mysterious force. The movie studio has been usurped, and it is up to the user to enter the movie sets and rescue Elvira. Unfortunately, the movie sets have come to life, and the user will have to battle monsters, create magical spells to use, and find myriad inventory pieces to help solve puzzles. If the user fails, Cerberus…the guardian multi-headed dog of the underworld…will take over the Earth.
Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus feature beautifully hand-drawn two dimensional graphics. The backgrounds and movie sets are also very well done, which is a good thing because the user has the ability to interact with just about everything. Almost everything the user encounters can either be picked up and placed in inventory, spoken to, battled, or manipulated in some way. With the crisp graphics, pixel hunting does not become so much of a problem.
Much of the inventory search and the manipulation of it will remind the user very much of classic point and click adventure games. But, like a role playing game, the character in Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus can gain experience points, gain levels, and raise his attributes to become more powerful. This is a good thing, because the user has trouble carrying the bazillions of items that he can pick up from his surroundings. The user has to take care what he says to the people/creatures he will meet within the movie settings (mostly a haunted house) for fear of death. See below.
Again similar to an adventure game, there are seemingly a million and one ways to die, all of which are very graphically detailed. The user can be burned alive, decapitated, and mutilated. His eardrums can burst and blow up his head. This is just to hint at a bit of what awaits the brave souls who download this one.

Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus is a fairly decent game for the time period. The game is quite interesting and fun. Elvira pops in now and then with help and a quick insult or quip that will make you laugh so it has the Elvira charm and comedic value. I only wish this was a talkie so you could hear her speak instead of just reading it.
As a combination RPG/Puzzle/Adventure game it meets the mark and is worth the time to play it. The music is good, the stereo effect is cool with the music coming from the left speaker and most sound effects from the right and the occasional sounds from both, but you get used to it fairly quickly. The graphics are colorful and good animated!
This is a good game and worth the time to check out. If you downloading this game now you’ll have a lot of fun and interest!
