Game Review

Are you ready for an incredible game of chess? Theatre of War was created in 1992 by Artech and published by Three-Sixty Pacific Inc. It’s the world’s First Super VGA Game at a time when Super VGA in 256 colors was considered superior. Objects in the game are ray-traced for superb 3-dimensional graphics. Features Include three complete sets of warriors: Medieval(most simple and basic), The Great War, and Contemporary. Complex concepts are incorporated into the modern set's rules. Each set has its own unique graphical look and playing characteristics. The rules are simple but gameplay is complex. The player can give any number of commands to any number of pieces. As one side nears the opponents line, the soldiers of the opponent on the other side move out to defend. There are sounds of explosions and various pieces speak, indicating their status. The pieces execute your commands automatically. By utilizing strategy to destroy the opponents emperor, you win the game.

Each set is composed of 16 pieces of six different types, with up to six separate functions per piece. Each set has a commanding piece with certain healing and authority-based powers. Other pieces serve the roles of infantry, artillery, cavalry, and fire support. Strength and health are two very important characteristics of each warrior. Without strength it cannot move or defend and without health it dies. Strength and health can both be regained through re-supply, but most warriors require a supply source in order to renew their strength and health. There are three play screens; a 2d board, 3d board, and status screen. The user can view the strength and health bars for friendly and enemy warriors by the status screen. Play takes place on either the 2d or 3d board and each board is divided into squares. At times, only a portion of the playing field will be visible in both the 2d and 3d boards. Theatre of War can be played against a computer opponent, 2 players at the same computer or two players using two computers and a modem or serial cable. Although the mouse is faster, I prefer playing the game with the keyboard.

Sound track uses incredible techniques for a unique musical score each time the game is played. When the player is doing well the music is upbeat; when the player is losing, a blues theme is used.
Theatre of War provides some advantages over the ancient board game as combat is conducted in real time. If you’re an avid chess player who is looking for chess with a little extra excitement, then this game is highly recommended!!
